My name is Nerissa Hall, and I am the owner and operator of Bird’s-eye View Proofreading.
After transcribing for several years, I realized that my favorite part of transcribing was proofreading and that, being my passion, it really is my strongest skill. Having transcribed for the local sheriff’s department, I am very familiar and comfortable with legal terminology, so it seemed like a natural extension of my career to extend my proofreading skills to court reporters. Additionally, I work as an independent contractor transcribing for Speak Write, which caters to an incredibly wide variety of clientele, including workers’ compensation lawyers, CPS agencies, police departments, parole officers, therapists, and many more. This work has enhanced my adaptability to customer preference as, similar to court reporting, almost every client has their own preferred style for their documents.
To reinforce and amplify the skills I have gained by transcribing, I completed Caitlyn Pyle’s Transcript Proofreading: Theory and Practice course, which is based on Morson’s English Guide for Court Reporters, ensuring that I understand all that is needed and expected of a proofreader by a court reporter.
I take the guesswork and pressure out of proofreading for court reporters, whose job is already stressful enough. By solely focusing on the proofreading process, I am able to hone in on errors that otherwise may have been missed, which allows the court reporter to submit the best version of their work confidently to their clients.
